Books For Africa is pleased to report that over 390,000 books shipped to partners in Nigeria, South Sudan, and Kenya have landed and been distributed! These books, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense Funded Transportation Program, were shipped between June and November of last year. These three projects supplied 300 tons of high-quality book donations. Books For Africa appreciates the support from the U.S. Department of Defense to advance education across Africa, and to show support from the American people to people living in developing countries. 

Congresswoman Betty McCollum has been a key supporter of Books For Africa and its efforts to advance U.S. support for education in Africa. “So pleased to hear from Books For Africa that 15 containers with over 390,000 books have been delivered to sites in Kenya, South Sudan, and Nigeria, thanks to funding from the Department of Defense. As Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, I am proud to ensure continued federal funding for this important program!  Delivering books to young people helps them attain a brighter future. This is a powerful partnership with a global impact, starting at home in St. Paul” said Congresswoman McCollum.

In-Country Distribution

Nigeria

102,642 books were shipped to Nigeria in June of 2023, and were supported and distributed by the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation. 

South Sudan

99,191 books were shipped to South Sudan in October of 2023 under financial support of Rotary International led by the Rotary Club of Northfield, Minnesota and other Minnesota Rotary Clubs.  Books were received and distributed in South Sudan by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Rotary partners in South Sudan, and other partners.  

Kenya

188,266 books were shipped to Kenya in November of 2023 and were supported and distributed by Libraries for Kids International.
