BFA Sends Books to Schools in Ghana with BetterWorld Trust and Ghana Book Trust
Books For Africa recently worked with BetterWorld Trust to deliver a 40-foot container of supplementary books to Ghana Book Trust (GBT), to be distributed in Ghana. GBT worked with literacy NGOs such as Biblionef Ghana and Rotary Club to make sure the books reached the correct beneficiaries.
The books were distributed to school libraries, community libraries and orphanages, and used as prizes for schools holding reading competitions. GBT made an effort to distribute the books country-wide, with each beneficiary receiving 500 books each for a total of about 18,000 donated thus far. Some boxes remain to be distributed later in January. Beneficiaries were asked to fill out a form surveying them about their book needs and the current status of their libraries or book storage.
GBT runs a literacy program in the Ashanti region, called the Reading Ghana project. The initiative exists to teach public school teachers strategies to teach reading. As part of the program, GBT sets up libraries for each school, and is donating 200 books to each of the project schools to supplement their stock of books.
