BFA Shipped Over 1.9 Million Books to 21 African Countries in Fiscal Year 2011

BFA Shipped Over 1.9 Million Books to 21 African Countries in Fiscal Year 2011

BFA shipped 176 container units to 21 African countries in fiscal year 2011.

Books For Africa concluded its fiscal year on July 1, 2011, and shipped 178 container units to 21 African countries, representing approximately 1.9 million books shipped for a cumulative total of almost 25 million books shipped in BFA's history. These books were valued at $22.2 million. A total of $1.7 million in cash was raised by donors to ship these books. We also sent 643 computers and 13 new West law libraries to Africa last fiscal year. This was our biggest and best year ever at BFA!

Top recipient countries of BFA support in FY 11 were Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, and Tanzania. Historically, over the past 23 years the top BFA recipient countries have been Ghana (2 million books), Ethiopia (1.9 million books), Liberia (1.5 million books), and Tanzania (1.4 million books). BFA does not select countries to which books are shipped – rather BFA donors select countries and raise funds to ship books to those countries. So if you have a favorite African country that you would like to assist, BFA would be pleased to work with you to raise funds to ship books to that country.

We at Books For Africa are proud that we were able to ship 1.9 million books to Africa last year. In these difficult times, the financial support of our donors to help ship more books to schools, universities, and libraries in Africa is even more important. Our goal for next fiscal year is to ship 15% more books to Africa—a total of 2.2 million books. We all need to do more to make sure the kids in Africa get the books they need and deserve. We thank you all for your help in making this happen!
