Books For Africa Works with Key Partners to Build and Equip Somali Library

p> Children read their BFA books at the new library/community center in Garowe, Somalia.

Books For Africa was honored to work in collaboration with a number of outstanding organizations to build and equip the first public library/community center in Garowe, Somalia (Puntland). A number of outstanding organizations' efforts have made this a huge success. Where previously there was nothing, there is now a vibrant library and community center used by the people of this region to read, and to meet for community discussions. This library complex has become a hub of activity in Garowe, which is what libraries are supposed to be! The library also offers public access to the Internet, which better connects the community with the global community.

Books For Africa provided the donated textbooks for this project, with shipping donated by Counterpart International. Somali Family Services, based in Minnesota, led this effort. Funding was provided by Dikonia Sweden, United Nations Development Programme-Somalia, and many others. Books For Africa will be shipping additional library books for this exciting effort in the near future. Additionally, the library/community center will be used as a distribution hub to provide books to outlying villages and schools in rural communities. Thank you to everyone for making this project such a huge success.
