Krio Language Books and Girls Empowerment Collections Distributed in Sierra Leone
The Sierra Leone Book Trust received a container shipment of books just in time for the start of the school year!
They were able to complete distribution of books to a number of schools including tertiary institutions in August and continued their work in September.
This distribution included textbooks in Krio, a local language in Sierra Leone. The Krio books were sponsored by BFA donor Yvonne Hauwiller, who formerly lived in Sierra Leone as a Peace Corps Volunteer.
It also included a girls empowerment collection sponsored by RPCV Madison's Gift Away Grant Program.
This container included The Mickey and William Liese Memorial Library, sponsored by Robyn Liese.
Shipments to Sierra Leone Book Trust always include the support of Professor Dick Simpson and university-level books contributed by his network.
BFA partner Sallieu Touray reported that the Krio books were distributed “…amidst excitement and jubilation by pupils and teachers. They thank Books For Africa for providing these much needed local language textbooks to the school, as this donation will improve learning outcomes, especially in the local language (Krio) and wish for more similar donations.”
He went on to report “My team and I continue today, Friday 24th September, with another presentation of books to the Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG). The Girls Empowerment Collections assigned to the school by Books For Africa and sponsors were presented in a well attended ceremony with the 2 principals of the school (Junior and Senior Secondary Schools) fully involved in the ceremony. The school administrators, teachers and pupils were so excited and appreciative of the Girls Empowerment Collection donation to the school. As always, they asked for more of this book support from Books For Africa and sponsors. My team and I were also excited to do what we have done in the past 2 days to support literacy and education in Sierra Leone, especially for girls.”
