Thanks to generous funding from the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation (SEOF), eight sea containers of BFA books and computers are being distributed to over 200 schools and libraries throughout Nigeria. In addition, the University of Nigeria at Nsukka law faculty will receive a core library of brand-new West law books donated by Thomson Reuters through BFA's Jack Mason Law & Democracy Initiative.

Students at 80 primary schools, 80 secondary schools, 30 tertiary institutions, and 15 state/community libraries in the six geo-political zones of Nigeria will benefit from this project. BFA Executive Director Pat Plonski noted that “this is the largest donation by a single benefactor in the history of Books For Africa, and the largest donation ever to Nigeria. Books For Africa is truly honored to partner with the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation to advance education in Nigeria and believes that this very generous donation serves as a good example for others of what can be achieved through a philanthropic spirit.”

At the book distribution ceremony in Oraifite, Sir Emeka Offor, the founder of SEOF, said the objective of the foundation was to give back to society what God had given him and “to uplift the standard of education in the country.”

The Honorable Howard Jeter, former U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, sent a congratulatory message: “From my time in Nigeria, I am keenly aware of the need for primary and secondary school books and computers. This extremely generous donation of school books, law texts, a large container of school supplies, and over 100 computers will go a long way to meet the needs of Nigeria’s future generations.”

A Books For Africa team will be in Nigeria in September of 2011 to visit book distribution sites and to meet with officials of the Sir Emeka Offor Foundation to discuss future shipments of more books to Nigeria to continue to build on the successes that have been achieved.”
