U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers Bring Books to Students in Ethiopia
A study conducted in Ethiopia found that a large percentage of children are illiterate in English even though it is a required school subject for all Ethiopian students. This is largely because students lack access to English reading materials both at school and at home. The Early Grade Reading Centers project was created by a group of U.S. Peace Corp volunteers based in Ethiopia to bring English books to students.
Volunteers worked together to establish reading and literacy centers in the schools and libraries they serve throughout the country.
As a result of partnership between Books For Africa and the Peace Corps volunteers, 22,000 BFA books were received and distributed to fill the libraries of ten Ethiopian communities in September of 2012! It is the Peace Corps volunteers’ hope that Ethiopian children and their families will be able to enjoy the benefits of these new libraries for years to come.
